The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) and the NCEA have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to continue their partnership for another three years. The aim of this strategic partnership is to strengthen technical capacity and support better environmental and social governance in the mining sector in IGF member countries.

This renewal is a continuation of the MoU signed in 2023, following several years of cooperation between the two organisations. Activities under this partnership have included the development of a Mining ESIA Tool (MET), capacity strengthening for IGF member countries, and a publication on country case studies concerning SEA for the mining sector.

Under the renewed MoU, the NCEA and IGF will collaborate on knowledge products, technical assistance, and capacity-building activities. This will help governments of IGF member countries and NCEA target countries to strengthen the technical and institutional foundations needed to manage environmental and social risks in mining. The NCEA and IGF will develop joint projects on improved decision-making, when possible at plan level (Strategic Environmental Assessment). They will also collaborate on ESIA follow-up, specifically on compliance and enforcement of Environmental and Social Management Plans for mining projects and on implementation of the IGF’s Mining ESIA Tool.
