ESIA and SESA support to the Federal Ministry of Environment in Nigeria.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is well established in Nigeria, and an Act is currently being amended to integrate Public Health, Social and Strategic Assessment. The Act is titled: Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessment Bill 2025 (ESHIBA).  In an effort to continually improve the effectiveness of the environmental assessment system, the Federal Ministry of Environment of Nigeria requested collaboration with the Netherlands Commission for Environmental Assessment (NCEA) for training and mentorship.

Based on the request the NCEA will carry out an ESY-map workshop, which is a diagnostic tool for assessing the quality of a national EIA system in the country. Based on the results of the ESY-map, and upon the request of the Ministry, series of seminars and workshops will take place.  Additionally, a workshop on Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment (SESA) will also be conducted to build capacity and deepen understanding of integrating environmental and social considerations into policy, planning, and decision-making processes.
