The NCEA advised on Terms of Reference (ToR) for an EIA for a tannery sector development strategy in Sialkot. It focused on a comparison of alternative strategies, since this is essential to identify an option that is supported by the tanneries.

Significant details

The formulation of the strategy  mentioned above is one step in the process of improving the environmental performance of the tanning industry in Pakistan. This process was started in 1992 by the Pakistan Tanners Association in cooperation with DGIS. The Commission’s role in this process has been an advisory one (see also projects 002, 017, 022 and 023). A project to create a separate industrial estate for the tanneries on the edge of town was proposed earlier to the World Bank, and an environmental impact statement was prepared in 1993. That project was not implemented because there was too little support for it among the tanners.
