Burundi

In 2025, the NCEA received two requests for support from Burundi.

The first request This link opens in a new tab is from RVO-DRRS supporting the national platform of disaster risk reduction and the management of catastrophes, through their collaboration with IOM. The aim is to find ways to strengthen the role of ESIA and SEA and/or its principles in decision-making in general, and more specifically related to disaster risk reduction.

Following the workshop under that first request and subsequent exchanges on the strategic issues that were discussed during and after the workshop, another request This link opens in a new tab was issued by the Bureau for strategic studies and development (BESD) of the Presidency to support them integrating principles and the approach of strategic environmental and social assessment into strategic land use planning.

Legislation in Burundi

In June 2000, Burundi enacted its current Environment Code, with Chapter III focusing on the environmental impact assessment process.

Ten years on, Decree No. 100/22 of October 7, 2010 on the enforcement of the Environmental Code in connection with the procedure for environmental impact assessment was enacted. This Decree regulates the EIA procedure in more detail. However, the step of scoping was not yet regulated in the Decree. This was remedied by means of a Ministerial Order in 2013.

In 2019, a draft revised Environment Code has been sent to parliament and is awaiting signature by the President. In the new Code, the EIA procedure will be revised and Strategic Environmental Assessment is expected to be introduced in the country.
