Environmental and Social Assessment System Strengthening – Burundi

In 2024, the NCEA received a request for technical assistance to the national platform for disaster risk reduction and the management of catastophes (PN-PRGC). The request came from RVO-DRRS supporting IOM in Burundi. The aim of the assistance is to introduce and advocate for the integration of DRR into ESIA and SEA, and the use of ESIA and SEA in DRR in Burundi to help focus more on prevention.

In March 2025, the NCEA organised a workshop for the national platform PN-PRGC on the topic, in collaboration with our long-term partner OBPE. Though the focus was mostly on ESIA, SEA was introduced as well as an instrument to consider in future planning, using the multi risk map for Burundi produced by IOM as a specific DRR tool.
