The CNEE was approached by the Mauritanian Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD), through its Directorate of Environmental Assessment and Control (DECE), to review the updated Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) report for the uranium mining project led by Aura Energy. The aim of this mission is to make independent recommendations to inform the decision on the environmental feasibility of the project. This support is part of a broader technical cooperation agreement, which also provides for the strengthening of the regulatory framework, training for national stakeholders, and support for complex projects. The advisory report (in French) can be found here: NCEA

The Tiris Uranium project, led by Aura Energy Limited, is located in the Tiris Zemmour region in northeastern Mauritania. It is the first uranium mining project in the country. The MEDD wishes to ensure that the assessment complies with national legislation and international standards in order to guarantee responsible management of environmental and social impacts.
