The NCEA issued a memorandum on the extent to which SEA applied for wetland policies meets principles of good practice. The added value of SEA for such policies is also described.

Significant details

Wetlands International (WI) stresses the importance of applying SEA for the development of wetland policies. In ten African countries, SEA will be applied for the development or adaptation of wetland policies. The NCEA was asked to assess the added value of SEA for such policies and to develop a suitable SEA approach.

The NCEA issued an advice of the secretariat, consisting of:

  • A description of the approach used in the development of national wetland policies;
  • A review of this approach, based on ten SEA good practice principles;
  • A description of the added value of SEA for this case.

Main findings include the conclusion tht five out of ten SEA good practice principles are currently applied in the development of wetlands policies.
