The NCEA advised on Terms of Reference (ToR) for an EIA which should be undertaken for formulation of an Environmental Management Plan for tannery industries. This EMP should focus on minimizing environmental pollution and nuisance and should thereby improve the health status of residents and workers.

Significant details

The formulation of the environmental management plan for Karangi is one step in the process of improving the environmental performance of the tanning industry in Pakistan. This process was started in 1992 by the Pakistan Tanners Association in cooperation with DGIS. The Commission has played an advisory role in this process, and the Terms of Reference were taken into account in preparing a Policy Development Plan (PDP) for Korangi. According to the DGIS this plan is not an Environmental Impact Assessment and no formal review of the PDP was requested. Instead, an outline review was requested. See appendix 5, memorandum 9713 for more information.
