Sharing best practices at Green Hydrogen Summit

We look back on a well-attended session about environmental and social best practices at the Green Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam.

The Dutch Ministry of Climate Policy and Green Growth (KGG), the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), and the Netherlands Commission for Environmental Assessment organised a session on environmental and social best practices in green hydrogen development, with insights from Morocco, Mauritania, South Africa, and Namibia.

The session was well visited. There was a lively debate about the need for early and upstream planning by taking a regional perspective instead of a focus on projects. The application of Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) to support strategic planning for green hydrogen production was advocated for by all panellists.
Another issue discussed was producing hydrogen and ammonia (for export) versus using hydrogen to develop energy intensive industry, and the socio-economic and environmental impacts involved in these strategic choices. SEA can support producing countries in making a balanced strategic decision in this.
