NCEA’s Director International Dennis van Peppen participated in the annual general assembly of the The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) from 3-5 November. The NCEA and IGF have formed a strategic collaboration for the improvement of environmental assessment processes in mining development in LMIC’s. Van Peppen contributed to a panel on ‘Strengthening water governance’. He spoke about the need for integrating IWRM and SEA in the context of mining development in river basin management or land use planning. His key message: SEA and IWRM add value for mining sector development, especially in identifying risks of mining activities for water resources in a wider river basin or landscape. They are important for a strategic impact assessment on river basin or landscape level, responsible and equitable water resources management, for collaborative governance, for identifying alternatives for development, and for improving wider stakeholder engagement.
