The green hydrogen sector is rapidly developing in Morocco. The government is in the process of selecting investors and is carrying out a range of studies looking at overarching issues like infrastructure, desalinisation and industrialisation. The right time to discuss the added value and consider application of Strategic Environmental Assessment for this new sector in Morocco. To this aim, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development (MTEDD), together with the Dutch Embassy in Morocco and the NCEA, organised a workshop.
The workshop hosted over fifty participants. The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy MASEN informed the audience about the state of play of the hydrogen sector in Morocco. The MTEDD presented the SEA guidelines that are under development and the NCEA explained how SEA can help the government to be prepared for the future and how the Netherlands, Namibia, and South Africa use SEA to deal with socio-economic issues in the sector. The participants practiced in applying alternative development options and involving multiple sectors in addressing different kinds of impacts. They valued the multidimensional approach of SEA.
After the workshop, actors of the MTEDD and MASEN discussed next steps to be taken.
