In April, we reported that the Water Agency of the Mouhoun (AEM) is developing an Integrated Water Resources Management Plan (IWRM) for three sub-basins within its perimeter (Upper Mouhoun Upstream, Upper Mouhoun Downstream and Sourou) . The plan is accompanied by an SEA, which is being developed simultaneously. The NCEA is assisting AEM in the development of the SEA.

The NCEA was pleased to note that many of its observations about consultation were taken into account in the draft version of the SEA Report on the IWRM plan. These include observations relating to stakeholders not only in Burkina Faso, but also in a transboundary context, as water management in Burkina Faso has a major impact on water availability in the Malian part of the Sourou. However, the IWRM plan still needs to be based on accurate numbers of water use in Mali. The SEA began with a mapping of stakeholders and an analysis of four development scenarios. The scenario selected is called Sini Gnansigui, which means: Tomorrow will be better.

The final SEA report has yet to be validated by ANEVE, the National Authority for Environmental Assessment. The IWRM plan and the SEA combined must be finalised before the end of the year.
