Report by IGF and the NCEA

What is needed to successfully carry out an SEA for mining? In a joint effort, IGF and the NCEA have studied the SEA for the Zambezi Valley in Mozambique, where mining plays an important role in the economy. Through a policy dialogue with different stakeholders, the Zambezi Valley SEA brought environmental and social aspects into the region’s planning process. A report of this case study has now been published, following up on Strategic Environmental Assessment for the Mining Sector: Lessons From Country Case Studies, published in 2024.

The report shows how an SEA can be developed in practice and how it can be included in decision making for a region where mining is a key sector. The report presents core elements of a good quality SEA and gives insights on how mining sector plans and projects can be included in SEA for land use planning. It enables stakeholders and decisionmakers to take into consideration different strategic interests, including those of the mining sector and it helps countries to avoid or reduce negative social and environmental consequences of mining.
