Review scoping ESIA mining - Burkina Faso

At the request of ANEVE, the Environmental Assessment agency in Burkina Faso, the NCEA will review the scoping report for the ESIA for the Niou mine, located in the centre of the country. In addition to the environmental impacts, the social impacts are expected to be an important issue in this ESIA. Our advisory report - prepared with an expert working group - will be published in May.

ESY MAP - Uganda

After three days of mapping the ESIA system, 25 enthusiastic staff members of NEMA formulated recommendations to improve Ugandan's ESIA practice. For example: more attention for review, increase awareness on ESIA, and more time and means for enforcement. In addition, we provided an introductory training on SEA, since NEMA wants to start with new pilots to speed up their SEA practice.

ESIA approach mining sector - Mali

The NCEA and IGF organised a 4-day workshop to assess the ESIA approach for Mali’s mining sector, using the Mining ESIA Tool (MET). Lively discussions between the participants - including government staff, representatives of private sector and civil society – highlighted, among others, that:

  • A major issue is non-compliance with legislation;
  • Social issues need more attention;
  • Closure and rehabilitation of old mines will become an issue soon.
