Signing MoU with Department of Control Mining Operations - Senegal

The mining sector is growing in Senegal, as is the number of abandoned mining sites in need of rehabilitation. The newly established Department of Control Mining Operations wants to ensure that environmental and social considerations are integrated in the rehabilation plans for these mines.

Signing MoU with Ministry of Environment & Sustainable Development - Guinea

The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD) in Guinea is embarking on a series of larger projects and reform processes related to environmental and social assessments: the SEA for the chimpansee-rich Bafing Falémé landscape; the World Bank-financed programme on mining and environmental governance; and the creation of a more autonomous environment agency. We are honored that the Ministry asked us to support these exciting developments.

Masterclass on gender equality and mining governance - Argentina

In April, IGF organised a masterclass for 50 representatives of Argentinian mining and environmental authorities on the integration of gender analysis into ESIAs. The objective was to encourage awareness and discussion on a roadmap, as well as possible next steps.

Over the past years the NCEA supported the drafting of SEA regulations, SEA guidelines and ESIA review for 3 petroleum related projects. Experiences and lessons learnt on the latter have been documented in a case study.

Synergy: increasing local ownership through environmental and social assessment

At the start of this year, a webinar was organised to discuss the potential of ESIA and SEA to increase local ownership of water management programmes. Cases from Mali, Niger and Bangladesh were presented by Dutch embassy staff and local stakeholders, such as government authorities. The summary of the workshop is an interactive presentation.
