7285-02. Promoting Good Practice EIA Jordan through Professional Exchange

In a series of seminars and workshops, professionals working with ESIA in Jordan discuss key challenges.

Détails significatifs

At each event we address a specific theme and exchange good practice experiences on the selected topic. The exchange serves to improve ESIA practice by inspiring practitioners. In addition, the community attending can set standards for what to expect in ESIA, which can then be used in ESIA review, for example.

The first series of activities looked at how risks related to hazardous substances can be addressed in an ESIA. The explosion in the port of Beirut in 2020 put this topic on the agenda. We developed a checklist on the basis of the insights shared at the worksessions.

The second series of activities looks at how ESIA processes can help to come to climate smart decisions. We looked at trends in international best practice and identified the types of projects for which climate is relevant in Jordan right now. The ESIAs for those projects should explore both how to increase resilience to climate change, as well as reduce climate emissions. In a follow up session, carbon calculations were demystified. We covered sophisticated risk assessment and green house gas emission quantification methods as well as more simplified checklists. Often a simplified approach is already a good first step towards more resilient or low carbon project options. In future workshops we will be sharing more practical experiences.

The sessions are organised jointly by the Ministry for Environment and the NCEA. GIZ has provided support to the workshops on climate change.
