NCEA at IAIA conference
The 2017 conference of the International Association for Impact Assessment took place in Montréal (4-7 April). At the conference, the NCEA received the 2017 IAIA Institutional Award. We also presented our new publication on climate change and impact assessment (see item below).

Climate smart decisions through ESIA/SEA
Can environmental assessment help to combat climate change or adapt to its effects? Yes, it can! The NCEA published a compendium of twelve cases - gathered from members of the International Association for Impact Assessment - that show 'good practice' in a variety of sectors and countries.

Advice: EIA for Pan Hlaing project Myanmar
At the request of Myanmar’s Department of Irrigation, the NCEA advised on the content to be addressed in the EIA for the Pan Hlaing sluice project. This project creates a fresh water reservoir for irrigation and domestic purposes. It is a pilot project in the cooperation between Myanmar and The Netherlands.

Capacity development in Mozambique, Zanzibar, Bangladesh and Cambodia
The NCEA has new and ongoing cooperation programmes in various countries. In Mozambique, for example, support was given on ESIA legislation. With partners in Zanzibar, a new 2-year cooperation has taken off. In Bangladesh and Cambodia, the NCEA is planning to provide training and support pilot SEAs.

Workshop on IFC performance standards
ESIA is an important aspect of the Performance Standards of IFC. In a 'train the trainers' workshop on these standards, the NCEA educated participants on ESIA in the public sector. The workshop was organised by IFC with the Institute of Environmental Studies at the Chiekh Anta Diop University in Dakar, Senegal.

First national SEA conference in Uganda
In February, Uganda organised its first National Conference on SEA. The event was attended by over 150 participants, among others from government, NGOs, development partners, and academia. The NCEA attended the conference and presented two Dutch SEA cases.
