SEA & delta strategy Myanmar: green or grey?

Green or grey? That was the question in an SEA workshop for the 'Integrated Ayeyarwady Delta Strategy' in Myanmar. Participants showed interest in the green scenario, based on adaptations to the natural system. A grey scenario, on the other hand, takes manmade infrastructure as a starting point.

  September 2017 - Mozambique

SEA workshop Mozambique

In a week-long workshop, staff of the Environmental Ministry in Mozambique (MITADER) learnt about the basics of SEA. They were trained in preparing for SEA, managing the process, and using SEA results in decision making. The workshop was organised by MITADER and WWF, and the NCEA contributed to it.

  September 2017 - Ethiopia

Developing ESIA capacity in Amhara, Ethiopia

In Ethiopia, the mandate to administer ESIA is being decentralised from the national to the regional level. As a result, regional environment bureaus feel a need to increase their ESIA capacity. Upon request of Amhara State, the NCEA organised a regional workshop on ESIA scoping in July 2017.

SEA for Rukwa-Katavi landscape, Tanzania

In Tanzania's Rukwa–Katavi landscape, where major projects are planned, local stakeholders want to better manage development of the area. SEA can be useful to support planning, but is relatively unknown. A four-day workshop was held in Mbeya to build understanding of SEA and identify opportunities for its use.

  September 2017 - Uganda

Working visit of NEMA Uganda team

The Ugandan environmental authority (NEMA) visited the NCEA to discuss its review of an ESIA scoping report and ToR. The ESIA concerns an oil export pipeline between Uganda and Tanzania. The visit gave both parties the opportunity to discuss issues in depth, and helped to develop NEMA's review capacity.

  September 2017 - Zanzibar

Developing an ESIA website for Zanzibar

A website can be a good medium to inform project developers about the ESIA requirements for their projects. The Zanzibar Environmental Management Authority (ZEMA) aims to set up such a website. In a joint working session, the NCEA supported them in defining target audience and required contents of the site.
